American Idol To End in 2016 with Season 15
|American Idol to end in 2016|
American Idol, the sometimes star making TV show will be ending in 2016. Fox announced that Season 15, premiering January 2016 will be the last season of the once powerhouse show after years after declining ratings. It is thought that Fox is essentially giving respect to the show by letting it continue for one final season, after it wraps up Season 14 this month.
Once an untouchable, white hot gargantuan hit beating out every other show on television by millions of viewers, American Idol's ratings have cooled in recent years as tons of tv shows based on the same premise filled television schedules across many networks. The most popular of those shows, The Voice, recently beat American Idol in the ratings for the first time. Ratings for Idol peaked in Season 5 with an average of over 35 million viewers, but continued to end the TV season as the #1 most watched show as viewership for all of TV continued to decline. By Season 12 Idol averaged 17 million viewers for the season resulting in a #7 finish for the year. By Season 14 in 2014 the show dropped to a #22 finish for the year and lost it's major sponsor Coca-Cola.
American Idol was a cultural phenomenon for 10 seasons, making stars of the winners and even finalists. Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, Fantasia Burrino, Mandisa, Ace Young, Kellie Pickler, Katharine McPhee, Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis, Phillip Phillips and many many more.
Fox states that the 15th season of American Idol will be a celebration and a tribute to the amazing run and cultural impact of the show. American Idol, Season 15, will debut in January 2016.
